Since then he has faced what all of the nearly ten thousand hostages in occupation dungeons face: isolation, torture, and death. Recently the occupation has relocated him and allowed his lawyer to meet with him briefly. His message to the world was matter-of-fact, “This is the last time you’ll see me. They brought me here [to Nitzan Prison] to kill me”. Dr. Abu Safiya never abandoned his patients and community in the face of the worst humanity has to offer. Now, it’s our turn to stand up for him.
But what can be done? Doctors Against Genocide (DAG), an organization that advocates and supports healthcare workers resisting genocide worldwide, is asking all people of conscience to apply pressure to their government institutions in a targeted campaign this week. We must reach out to our representatives and embassies to demand Dr. Abu Safiya’s immediate release. Every voice strengthens this campaign, and we all have something to contribute.
